PIAA Soccer: 2nd-half rally spoils dream
Class A Boys: Reichart's two goals thwart Rebels' bid for back-to-back championships
Sunday, November 22, 2009

HERSHEY, Pa. -- Having watched plenty of Christopher Dock video, Michael Thomas knew what the Pioneers wanted to do whenever the ball hopped into their offensive end.

Yet, despite the preparation and despite constructing a game plan predicated on slowing down Brandon Reichart, Ryan Seiz and Johnny Rajabi, Thomas' Seton-LaSalle Rebels could not quiet Dock's impressively prolific trio.

Reichart pocketed two second-half goals off assists from Seiz and Rajabi as Christopher Dock held off a fast-closing Seton-LaSalle, 2-1, in the PIAA Class A boys' soccer championship game yesterday at Hersheypark Stadium.

Jeff Cancelmi's goal with 8:28 to go ignited a late uprising that put plenty of pressure on Christopher Dock goalkeeper David Brelsford (2 saves), but the Rebels (18-8-0) could not find an equalizer. As a result, their bid for a repeat championship vanished.

"We did a good job," Thomas said. "We know we tried our best. They're a good team. [Reichart] was dangerous on the film we watched, [Seiz] was great at controlling the ball, and [Rajabi] was a great distributor."

Although Reichart was kept off the board in the opening half mainly because Rebels keeper Cory Smigielski (4 saves) made a terrific stop on the senior striker with 14 minutes gone -- the Christopher Dock senior finally broke through 9:41 into the second half.

A nifty volley off Seiz's chip from the edge of the penalty area was more than enough to give the Pioneers (20-3-1) a 1-0 lead.

"It was getting to the point where we just needed to finish off a ball, and I was just hoping a ball was going to slip through," Reichart said. "Seiz was able to get a flick on it and, somehow, I was able to get an inside run on that guy.

"Just anticipation, pretty much."

Reichart tacked on his second goal with 14:30 left -- his 38th of the season and 15th in the playoffs --when Rajabi launched a ball from the right-corner flag toward the back post. One well-struck header later, Christopher Dock was up, 2-0.

Cancelmi got one back, slotting a slick James DelGreco dish past Brelsford that energized the Rebels. While that energy level generated late scoring chances from DelGreco, Tyler Balzer and Tyler Trainor, no one could connect.

"The way [Christopher Dock] played the last game, they did the same thing this game," Thomas said. "We tried our best to stop it and we got a couple opportunities. We just didn't put them away."
