Hole cut in bank roof, but no withdrawal made
Wednesday, November 04, 2009

Investigators suspect burglars recently cut a hole in the roof of a Westmoreland County bank with the intention of stealing money.

Nothing was reported taken from the First Niagara Bank on East Pittsburgh Street in Hempfield, state police said.

In fact, there is no evidence the suspects ever used the cut to enter the building.

The hole recently was discovered after bank employees noticed a water leak that appeared to have been coming from above the ceiling.

A contractor informed bank operators that a hole had been cut.

"It looks like somebody tried to gain entry, but all they did was cause damage to the roof," said Greensburg state police Trooper Stephen J. Limani.

Damage is estimated at $3,000.
