Two residents escaped unharmed from a two-alarm fire early Tuesday that destroyed their home at 5402 Chestnut St.
Authorities did not identify who was living there. The pair had escaped from the home by the time South Baldwin firefighters arrived, but a nearby power line caught fire and a ruptured gas valve fueled the flames, causing difficulty for firefighters. To avoid fanning the flames, the crew was forced to wait until the gas could be turned off by Equitable Gas.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by the Allegheny County fire marshal's office.
Borough officials Tuesday said they would advertise an ordinance designed to regulate open burning. The ordinance establishes rules and enforcement criteria, including penalties, for violations.
Solicitor Stanley Lederman said the ordinance was necessary to protect the health, safety and welfare of residents.
Action on the proposal, which is on view at the borough office, is planned for Nov. 24.
Officials discovered the lack of regulations about open burning when, in August, a McAnnulty Road resident complained about health issues regarding the use of backyard chimineas and other types of recreational fire pits.
The ordinance requires the use of approved outdoor receptacles for burning, prohibits the release of noxious or unpleasant odors and smoke, restricts fires from being closer than 15 feet to a structure, prohibits burning from midnight until 7 a.m. and requires fires to be attended at all times.
Violators are subject to a $600 fine for each offense.
The Oliver Miller Homestead in South Park will host a twilight tour from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Sunday. The buildings in the Whiskey Rebellion site will be lit by candles and lanterns. Staff in period costume will show how pioneer families spent their nights: women sewing and cooking, men discussing politics around a campfire.
In November 1794, the Miller family and neighbors were deeply involved in events of the Whiskey Rebellion.
Visitors can buy warm cider and cookies.
The homestead is open Sundays through Dec. 13. Admission is $2.
