TENNIS: Peters wins AAA crown

Peters Township claimed its second WPIAL team tennis title and first since 1996 with a 3-2 win against Upper St. Clair in the Class AAA final yesterday at Club 4 Life in Monroeville.

The Indians were seeded fifth in the 16-team bracket, while the Panthers were No. 2. Peters Township was making its second title appearance in the past four years.

Julie Stroyne and Caroline Nixon posted singles victories for Peters Township, while teammates Elizabeth Palko and Eleni Coleman posted a doubles win for the Indians.

Nixon needed three sets to defeat Upper St. Clair's Brittney Russell, 2-6, 6-4, 6-1.

In the City League, Allderdice's Lauren Rubin and Elizabeth Haynes won the doubles title with a 6-0, 6-2 win against Schenley's Nicole Grabowski and Angelina Winbush.

Rubin and Haynes advanced to the title match with a 6-2, 6-3 semifinal win against Allderdice teammates Emily Wolfson and Rebecca Brown.
