The Pirates never successfully got a runner beyond second base after the first inning against a rookie starting pitcher, and the Chicago Cubs got two home runs that proved enough in a 4-1 defeat of the Pirates tonight before 15,770 in PNC Park.
The Cubs quickly collected two runs in the top of the first off Virgil Vasquez (1-1). Left fielder Sam Fuld doubled for his first major-league hit, and one out later Derrek Lee clubbed to center field his 12th home run of the season.
The Pirates came back with a run in the bottom of the first, Andrew McCutchen leading off with a double and scoring on Brandon Moss' two-out single. Otherwise, they couldn't seem to get to Cubs rookie starter Randy Wells (3-3), who faced the minimum of three batters in five of his next six innings and registered his third consecutive triumph after an 0-3 star. In the fifth, the Pirates had two on and two out, but Jack Wilson was thrown out at home trying to score from second on Freddy Sanchez's single into short left field.
Joel Hanrahan, acquired a day earlier from Washington in the Nyjer Morgan-Sean Burnett deal, made his Pirates debut with a scoreless seventh. He allowed Fuld a lead-off single, but then got Ryan Theriot to bounce into a groundout. After three sliders in succession to Lee, Hanrahan struck him out with a 95-mph fastball.
In all, Hanrahan hit 92, 93 (three times), 94 (five times) and then 95 mph on his seven fastballs among his 11 pitches.
Kosuke Fukudome homered in the sixth off Vasquez, and the Cubs added a run in the eighth when Jesse Chavez allowed two Cubs to reach -- on a walk and an infield single -- and Steven Jackson yielded an RBI single to Geovany Soto.
