Sanchez, Ohlendorf spark 3-0, Pirates triumph
Tuesday, June 30, 2009

Freddy Sanchez, the Pirates' No. 2 hitter with Nyjer Morgan traded earlier in the afternoon to Washington, went 3 for 3 and drove in two runs while Ross Ohlendorf tossed seven shut-out innings and struck out a career-high eight tonight as the Pirates defeated the Chicago Cubs, 3-0, before 17,054 inside PNC Park.

Sanchez certainly has batted second in the order before -- the Pirates' record improved to 22-23 with him there this season. Yet a night after going 0 for 4 with six teammates aboard, Sanchez walked in his first plate appearance, singled and scored in the fourth inning, signled and drove in Jack Wilson with two out in the fifth, and doubled in pinch-hitter Steve Pearce with two out in the seventh.

He could've been a scapegoat for a defensive misplay in the eighth inning, when a diving Wilson stab and throw sailed over the head of a Sanchez who kept his spikes on second base but failed to stop the throw from going to the foul line in short right field. With pinch-hitter Milton Bradley taking second on that play and Ryan Theriot moving to third, reliever John Grabow then struck out Alfonso Soriano and Kosuke Fukudome before Derrek Lee grounded to Sanchez to end the threat.

Ohlendorf (7-6), who registered just one victory in his previous seven starts, allowed only two hits through 6 2/3 innings while outdueling Cubs starter Ted Lilly (7-6).. He also struck out three more than his previous career high, achieved five times before -- the latest May 29 against Houston.

Brandon Moss, starting for the eighth time this season (Pirates are 5-3) after Morgan and Sean Burnett were dealt to the Nationals, got on base thanks to two singles and Geovany Soto's dropped third strike in the fourth -- allowing Moss to reach and Sanchez to score -- plus recorded an inning-ending assist on a play that got out Soto at third in the seventh.

The Pirates also won their second game this season following a clubhouse-jarring trade, having beaten the New York Mets 11-6 on June 4 a day after the Nate McLouth trade.

Capps recorded his 18th save.
