Kevin Acklin, an independent candidate for mayor of Pittsburgh, called yesterday for an overhaul in the appointment process for members of city boards and authorities.
In a press conference in the shadow of Heinz Field, Mr. Acklin denounced Mayor Luke Ravenstahl for ousting Debbie Lestitian, the former head of the Stadium Authority, and said the incident showed the need for more independence in the selection of municipal panels.
Ms. Lestitian told the Post-Gazette that her removal was based on her opposition to the sale of parcels of land to Continental Real Estate Cos., which is developing the land between Heinz Field and PNC Park, and the Steelers, who are teaming with the developer to build a riverfront entertainment complex next to their stadium. Ms. Lestitian was replaced by Mike Danovitz in an appointment that does not require approval from council.
Mr. Acklin said that all city board appointments should be subject to confirmation by council. He also said that, if elected, he would create a nonpartisan commission to evaluate candidates for city panels. The lawyer also contended that no member of a city panel should be removed during his or her term without the approval of council.
"The mayor should value the independence of these public servants who serve on organizations whose very purpose is to conduct the city's business insulated from the whims and influences of politics,'' Mr. Acklin said.
Mr. Acklin, a former Republican, is running as an independent against Mr. Ravenstahl, as is Franco "Dok'' Harris.
