Wednesday, June 17, 2009

Two motorcyclists in Mercer County were killed yesterday after they were struck by an oncoming pickup truck.

Roy E. Sanner, 53, and Eva H. Struthers, 46, both of Franklin, were on motorcycles heading west on Georgetown Road in Deer Creek about 4:30 p.m. when an eastboundtruck, driven by Roger Wayne Beggs Jr., 36, of Meadville, crossed the center line, state police said.

The truck struck Mr. Sanner's motorcycle first, then struck Ms. Struthers'. After the collision, Mr. Beggs' truck traveled off the north berm and struck a tree, then rolled onto its left side. Police said Mr. Sanner's motorcycle slid about 20 feet and came to rest on the north berm; Ms. Struthers was knocked over and slid into a cornfield. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Mr. Sanner was flown to St. Elizabeth's Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Both were wearing helmets, and Mr. Beggs was wearing a seat belt.

Mr. Beggs was taken to Meadville hospital for treatment of injuries that police called moderate. The investigation continues and charges are pending against him, state police said.
