A truck knocked down a utility pole, which then fell onto a woman at a bus stop in East Liberty, fatally injuring her this morning.
Pittsburgh police reported the accident occurred about 8:30 a.m. at Frankstown Avenue and Paulson Street, which remained closed for hours as police investigated.
Witnesses told police a tractor-trailer made the right turn onto Frankstown from Broad Street and its trailer hit the pole.
The victim, who police identified as Marquetta Grate, 28, of Homewood, tried to get out of the way but was knocked to the ground. She was taken to UPMC Presbyterian, where she died.
Several other people at the bus stop reportedly were able to scramble away from the pole as it fell.
Police said the truck was being leased by Levin Furniture. The driver and a passenger were unhurt and were interviewed by police.
Ms. Grate was a 1999 graduate of Westinghouse High School.
