Clairton, ranked No. 2 in WPIAL Class A by the Post-Gazette, made a case for top-ranked status by routing No. 3 Monessen in a non-conference contest last night, 44-0, at the Greyhounds' home field.
Clairton (2-0) led, 38-0, at the end of the first quarter as Kevin Weatherspoon scored four times, including pass receptions of 40, 55 and 24 yards. Andrew Currington threw two of those scoring passes to Weatherspoon with Troy Webb accounting for the other scoring pass.
Monessen (1-1) was held to minus-10 yards rushing as Clairton held a commanding, 351-27, edge in overall offensive yardage. Clairton has outscored its two opponents this season by a cumulative 85-0.
Rochester 41, Riverview 3
The No. 1 Rams (2-0) rolled up 28 second-half points en route to an easy win against the visiting Raiders (0-2) in a non-conference game. Brandon Gray was 7-for-7 passing for 149 yards and three touchdowns to three different receivers. Gray also scored on a 6-yard run. Rochester had a balanced offense with 169 yards rushing and 162 passing.
Monaca 65, Carlynton 15
Zach Garger scored three touchdowns as the host Indians (2-0) routed the Cougars (1-1) in a non-conference game. Tony Reda scored on touchdown runs of 55 and 59 yards to lead No. 2 Monaca with 122 yards rushing. Monaca outgained Carlynton, 366-199.
North Catholic 26, Laurel 21
The fifth-ranked Trojans (2-0) squandered an early 13-0 lead, but rallied to win at home against the Spartans (0-2) in a non-league contest. Julian Durden led North Catholic with 147 yards rushing and scored on runs of 18, 31 and 80 yards.
Chartiers-Houston 35, Carmichaels 14
A 204-yard rushing effort by Brad Banas led the Bucs (2-0) to a non-conference home win against the Mikes (0-2). Banas scored three touchdowns on runs of 18, 1 and 22 yards.
Frazier 40, Mapletown 24
Kevin Shanaberger led the host Commodores (2-0) with 271 yards rushing on 18 carries against the Maples (0-2). Cory Minnick led Mapletown with 246 yards passing by completing 14 of 29 attempts.
Jefferson-Morgan 42, Avella 13
The visiting Rockets (2-0) blew out the Eagles (0-2) in a non-conference game, leading, 35-7, at halftime. Hans Lubich led the way for Jefferson-Morgan with 150 yards rushing.
South Side Beaver 35, Brentwood 7
The Golden Rams (2-0) forced three turnovers against the host Spartans (0-2). South Side Beaver led, 21-0, at halftime. The Golden Rams were led by Luke Shaffer, who netted 108 yards. Shaffer scored on runs of 32 and 27 yards late in the first half.
Fort Cherry 54, West Greene 0
The Rangers (2-0) scored in every quarter of a blowout victory at West Greene (0-2). Nate Crossey led Fort Cherry with touchdown runs of 6 and 12 yards.
Serra 30, California 8
The defending WPIAL champion Eagles (1-1) claimed their first victory, at California (0-2). T.J. Hetherington led Serra with 130 yards rushing and 159 yards passing.
Beth-Center 28, Burgettstown 0
The Bulldogs (1-1) earned a victory at Burgettstown (0-2) as Josh Lockett led with two touchdowns, including a 47-yard interception return.
Avonworth 35, Neshannock 6
The Antelopes (2-0) remained unbeaten with an impressive home win against Neshannock (1-1).
Union 21, Wilkinsburg 0
Union (1-1) claimed a shutout at non-conference Wilkinsburg (0-2).
