WPIAL Class AA Roundup: Quaker Valley jolts S. Fayette

South Fayette, the Post-Gazette's No. 4 team in Class AA, and considered to be one of the favorites to capture the Century Conference title this season, was stunned by visiting Quaker Valley, 16-15, last night.

The Quakers (1-1, 1-1) bounced back from a season-opening loss to Bishop Canevin and overcame a 15-7 deficit to record the upset.

Michael Hermes began the Quakers' comeback with a 23-yard field goal before halftime and scored the deciding touchdown on a 1-yard run with 9:31 left in the fourth quarter.

The Lions (1-1, 1-1) drove deep into Quaker Valley territory with 1:25 remaining, but an interception ended the drive.

OTHER GAMES

Deer Lakes 21, Burrell 20

Zac Capan caught a 73-yard touchdown pass from Geoff Landry with 1:28 remaining to lift the Lancers (1-1, 1-1) to the Allegheny Conference win at Burrell (1-1, 1-1). Troy Szwaczkowski's extra point provided the winning margin to cap a comeback by Deer Lakes, which trailed, 20-7, entering the fourth quarter.

Apollo-Ridge 22, Summit Academy 8

Derek Bandurak scored on a blocked punt to open the scoring as Apollo-Ridge (2-0, 2-0) rolled to an Allegheny Conference win against visiting Summit Academy (0-2, 0-2). Bandurak also caught a 15-yard scoring pass from Tyler Adring in the second quarter.

Valley 7, Kittanning 0 2 OTs

Lebren O'Neal scored the only touchdown on a 3-yard run in the second overtime to lift the Vikings (1-1, 1-1) to the Allegheny Conference win at Kittanning (0-2, 0-2). O'Neal led all rushers with 113 yards on 16 carries.

Ford City 54, West Shamokin 6

Ford City (2-0, 2-0), the No. 5 team in Class AA, jumped on visiting West Shamokin (0-2, 0-2) for 42 unanswered first-half points en route to the Allegheny Conference win. Ryan Kriley scored on touchdown runs of 22 and 20 yards. Kriley led all rushers with 113 yards on 12 carries. Ryan Young scored on a 55-yard punt return and a 46-yard pass from quarterback Jordan Eckman for the Sabers. The win was Ford City's 20th consecutive in conference play since losing to Valley, 27-20, Oct. 7, 2005.

Keystone Oaks 41, South Park 0

Dion Wigand was unstoppable as Keystone Oaks (2-0, 2-0) routed South Park (0-2, 0-2) in a Century Conference game. Wigand carried just 12 times, but gained 175 yards and scored five touchdowns on runs of 11, 13, 72, 5, and 38 yards. Jordan Maddox scored the final touchdown for Keystone Oaks on a 59-yard run and finished with 112 yards on six carries.

Seton-LaSalle 41, Cornell 0

Seton-LaSalle (2-0, 2-0) cruised to the Century Conference win at Cornell (0-2, 0-2). Quarterback Anthony Rizza and running back David Corteze each scored a pair of touchdowns for the Rebels, who built a 28-0 halftime lead. Rizza completed 8 of 16 passes for 136 yards. Cornell has been outscored, 94-19, in its two games.

Steel Valley 20, Northgate 6

Defending Century Conference champion Steel Valley (1-1, 1-1) bounced back from a season-opening loss to knock off host Northgate (0-2, 0-2). Delrice Williams scored a pair of touchdowns and finished the game with 123 yards on 29 rushing attempts to pace the Ironmen.

East Allegheny 45, Charleroi 14

Monte Ashby carried 20 times for 113 yards and touchdown, but it was the passing combination of quarterback Trevor Morris and receiver Jordan Matthews that stole the show as the Wildcats (1-1, 1-1) grabbed an Interstate Conference win against Charleroi (0-2, 0-2). The pair connected for three touchdowns on passes of 40, 41, and 16 yards. Morris finished 7 of 12 for 188 yards.

Jeannette 41, Brownsville 0

No. 3 Jeannette (2-0, 2-0) continued its Interstate Conference dominance with a lopsided win against host Brownsville (0-2, 0-2). The Jayhawks led, 35-0, at halftime before cruising in the second half. Quarterback Cameron Baradziej completed six of his nine passes for 89 yards and a pair of touchdowns for Jeannette, which has won 18 consecutive games.

Greensburg Central Catholic 28, McGuffey 9

The Centurions (2-0, 2-0) avenged a loss to McGuffey last season with their Interstate Conference victory against the visiting Highlanders (1-1, 1-1). Greensburg Central Catholic outgained McGuffey, 365-133, in total offense. David Miller scored on a pair of touchdown runs of 6 and 17 yards to lead the attack. Quarterback Trent Hurley completed 8 of 14 passes for 115 yards.

South Allegheny 9, Waynesburg 6

South Allegheny (2-0, 2-0) won its first two games of the season for the first time in at least the past 25 years by edging Waynesburg (1-1, 1-1) in an Interstate Conference victory. Dylan Bogdan kicked three field goals to provide all the points for the Gladiators. Bogdan's fourth quarter 37-yarder was the winner. Mike Clearly rushed for 80 yards on 18 carries for South Allegheny.

Mount Pleasant 33, Washington 7

Mount Pleasant (1-1, 1-1) routed Washington (0-2, 0-2) in an Interstate Conference matchup. Jim Stefancik scored a pair of touchdowns for the Vikings.

Aliquippa 47, Ellwood City 0

Aliquippa (2-0, 1-0), the No. 1 team in Class AA, flexed its muscles in its easy Midwestern Conference win at Ellwood City (0-2, 0-2). Maurice Carter paced the Quips' ground attack with 92 yards on four carries as seven different players scored touchdowns for Aliquippa. The Quips used their balanced attack to build a 35-0 halftime advantage.

Beaver Falls 39, Freedom 0

Beaver Falls (2-0, 2-0), No. 2 in Class AA, rolled over visiting Freedom (1-1, 1-1) in a Midwestern Conference game. Todd Thomas scored on touchdown runs of 6, 1, and 2 yards for the Tigers. Cody Cook added a 65-yard touchdown run and led all rushers with 101 yards on eight carries.

Mohawk 51 New Brighton 14

Mohawk (1-1, 1-1) posted an easy Midwestern Conference win against visiting New Brighton (0-2, 0-2). New Brighton has been outscored, 94-28, this season.

Beaver 41, Riverside 0

Riverside (0-2, 0-2) limited Beaver running back Jake Nardone to 122 yards on 14 carries, well below the 343 yards he gained last week, but the Bobcats (2-0, 2-0) still rolled to to the Midwestern Conference win. Beaver outgained the Panthers, 304-71, in total yards. The Bobcats have scored 84 points in their two games this season.

Center 26, Moon 7

Center (2-0) got a pair of touchdowns from Damon Cotton in its non-league win against Class AAA Moon.
