City League: No. 3 Carrick claims 28-6 win against Allderdice

Sam Banks and Bruce Thornton each scored two touchdowns and led Carrick (2-0, 2-0), ranked No. 3 in the City League by the Post-Gazette, to a 28-6 win against No. 2 Allderdice (0-2, 0-2) last night in game at Cupples Stadium.

A 1-yard run by Banks and a two-point conversion by Thornton in the first quarter put Carrick up 8-0. Allderdice answered in the second when Even Merida scored on a 13-yard run.

Carrick went up for good when Thornton caught a 53-yard scoring pass from Ryan Roeper later that quarter. Thornton's second touchdown came on a 58-yard interception return before halftime.

Banks scored his second touchdown in the fourth when he ran 37 yards for a score.

Roeper went 6 for 21 for 107 yards passing. His teammate led the game with 67 yards on 13 carries. Carrick outgained Allderdice, 241-157, in total yards and held a 12-4 advantage in first downs.

The Raiders' defense forced Allderdice into throwing four interceptions and recovered two fumbles.

OTHER GAME

Westinghouse 24, Oliver 6

Darrell Cosby threw for 117 yards, two touchdowns and ran for another score as Westinghouse (1-1, 1-1) topped Oliver (1-1, 1-1). Westinghouse had a total 162 yards, while Oliver gained 63. Javion Williams accounted for all of Cosby's passing yards on three catches.


Correction/Clarification: (Published Sept. 7, 2008) A City League football game between Carrick and Allderdice at Cupples Stadium was not stopped Friday night Sept. 5, 2008 while police investigated a shooting incident outside the stadium. This account as originally published Sept. 6, 2008 incorrectly said the game had been interrupted.
