Kelly Won, a sixth-grader at Carson Middle School, learned during the summer that her entry had been selected for special recognition in her age category in the student contest for the English as a Second Language conference, hosted by the Pennsylvania Department of Education.
The conference, Multiple Cultures, Multiple Voices -- Preparing Diverse Learners in the Era of Globalization -- was held Aug. 11-13 in Harrisburg.
Kelly's winning entry was selected by a panel of judges for best reflecting the theme of the conference. She and her parents were invited to a lunch, where she was recognized and given a blue ribbon.
Kim Bernardo, English as a Second Language teacher at Hosack Elementary School, was Kelly's fifth-grade teacher and sponsored her entry in the contest.
