Police warn against outbreak of vandalism
Sunday, August 31, 2008

Residents in a Richland community are being asked to take extra precautions following an outbreak of vandalism in their neighborhood.

Township Supervisor Brian O'Malley issued a warning Wednesday to residents of Orchard Park, citing several incidents of vandalism over the past three months, mostly to cars.

"It has involved cars parked in the street overnight," Mr. O'Malley said. "I have spoken with the police and it is believed that these incidents are adolescent in nature and that the vandals have mostly targeted vehicles that are unlocked."

One vehicle, left unlocked with the keys in it, was stolen. Police recovered the vehicle less than a mile away with the keys still in it. Police Chief Bob Amann said an arrest was made in that case, involving a group of juveniles who were charged with theft.

Other vehicles, left parked on the roadway, have been egged and also a few damaged when their mirrors were knocked off.

Chief Amann said incidents have occurred in other neighborhoods, and they have been happening all summer long.

"[Orchard Park] is not being hit any more than some other areas," he said. "But if people can keep their cars locked and off the streets if at all possible, it will help."

Mr. O'Malley also urged residents to keep their vehicles and homes locked, and park vehicles off the roadway. He also asked residents to report any suspicious activity to 911.

The nonemergency number for the Northern Tier Regional Police Department is 724-625-3157.
