Lineman's TD lifts Rochester to win at Monessen
Saturday, August 30, 2008

The only game last night that featured two ranked Class A teams had one touchdown, and it was scored by an unlikely source.

A fumble recovery by offensive lineman Aaron Parker helped Rochester open its season by claiming a 10-0 non-conference win at Monessen.

In the second quarter, Rochester quarterback Brandon Gray fumbled. Parker picked it up on the 1 and ran it in for a score. Paul Everson's extra point put Rochester up, 7-0.

Rochester, the top-ranked team in WPIAL Class A by the Post-Gazette, added to its lead in the fourth when Everson kicked a 20-yard field goal.

Running back Trey Johnson led the Rams with 72 yards on eight carries.

Monessen, ranked No. 4, was led by Kevin Suber, who also had 72 yards on 10 carries. His teammate, Terrance Stepoli, was the game's leading passer going 3 for 6 for 99 yards, but he had two interceptions.

Rochester outrushed Monessen, 207-90. Overall, Rochester had 211 yards while Monessen was limited to 158. Monessen had four turnovers.

Rochester is 7-0 all time against Monessen. The Rams have won four consecutive season-opening games. Their previous loss to open a season was a 27-14 defeat to New Brighton in 2004.

Dating to the playoffs last season, Monessen has been shut out in two consecutive games. The Greyhounds fell to Serra, 28-0, in the WPIAL semifinals.

Monessen is the defending Tri-County South Conference champion. Rochester, which also made the playoffs last season, lost in the quarterfinals to Clairton.
