WPIAL Class AA: South Fayette hits South Park with 20-10 win

Visiting South Fayette jumped on South Park for 10 points in the opening quarter and held on to post a 20-10 win over the Eagles in their WPIAL Class AA Century conference opening game last night.

South Fayette, the Post-Gazette's No. 4 team, got a 4-yard touchdown run from Brad Opar and a 39-yard field goal from Nolan Lavine to get off to the quick start.

Jeff Davis' 11-yard touchdown run upped the lead to 17-0 in the second quarter before the Eagles began to rally.

Nick Kazzka made a 26-yard field goal and Shane Dotson's 38-yard touchdown run in the third quarter closed the gap to 17-10 before Lavine closed the scoring with a 35-yard field goal in the fourth.

Dotson led all rushers with 190 yards on 22 carries. Davis paced South Fayette with 116 yards on 16 rushing attempts.

OTHER GAMES

Beaver 43, New Brighton 14

Jake Nardone carried 23 times for 343 yards to lead a ground attack which amassed 501 yards as Beaver rolled past New Brighton in a Midwestern game. Nardone, 5-foot-9 165 pound senior, rushed for 407 yards all of last season.

Nardone scored a pair of touchdowns on runs of 50 yards to open the scoring and 60 yards in the third quarter.

Apollo-Ridge 13, Deer Lakes 0

Apollo-Ridge blanked Deer Lakes in Allegheny Conference action. Apollo-Ridge outgained the host Lancers 287-124 in rushing yards and 321-183 in total offense in the game.

Burrell 34, West Shamokin 0

Burrell's Tom Henderson's second stint as the Bucs' head coach began with an easy Allegheny win against host West Shamokin. David Yakopec scored three touchdowns, all on passes from quarterback Camren Nelson, and Troy Highfield added a pair of scoring runs as the Bucs exhibited a balanced offensive attack that proved far too tough for West Shamokin to handle.

Freeport 21, Kittanning 7

Freeport's John Gaillot got a victory in his head coaching debut at the school as Freeport slipped past visiting Kittanning in their Allegheny conference matchup.

Bishop Canevin 43, Quaker Valley 14

Bishop Canevin exploded for 21 unanswered third-quarter points highlighted by an 86-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Lou DiPaolo to Steven Frost, breaking open their Century game at Quaker Valley. The Crusaders led by just 7-0 at halftime. Korrtezz Martin of Quaker Valley led all rushers with 167 yards on 13 carries.

Sto-Rox 53, Cornell 19

Sto-Rox quarterback Paul Jones, the WPIAL's No. 3 passer a year ago, completed 11 of 17 passes for 164 yards and two touchdowns in the Vikings' rout of visiting Cornell in Century conference play. Jones also scored on touchdown runs of 9 and 29 yards in the contest. Sto-Rox trailed 13-12 early in the second quarter but scored 28 second quarter points to take a 34-13 halftime lead.

Seton-LaSalle 28, Nothgate 6

Seton-LaSalle opened Century conference play with a win against Northgate. Dave Cortese paced the Rebel offense with a pair of touchdown runs from 64 and 32 yards. Cortese also scored the game's opening touchdown, hauling in a 24-yard pass from Anthony Rizza. Cortese finished with 133 yards rushing on 15 attempts.

South Allegheny 21, Brownsville 7

Former Duquesne head coach Pat Monroe was victorious in his South Allegheny debut as the Gladiators knocked off visiting Brownsville in Interstate play. Quarterback Zach Anderson connected on eight of 14 passes for 209 yards and a touchdown to pace the South Allegheny attack. South Allegheny was held to just 29 yards rushing by the Brownsville defense.

Greensburg Central Catholic 34, Charleroi 0

The Centurions blanked host Charleroi in their Interstate opener. David Miller scored three touchdowns for Greensburg Central Catholic on runs of 26, 1, and 4 yards.

McGuffey 28, Mount Pleasant 0

McGuffey jumped out to a 21-0 halftime lead and coasted to the Interstate win against visiting Mount Pleasant. Nick Shuman scored on a pair of short touchdown runs for the Highlanders.

Mount Pleasant was making its Class AA debut after winning Class AAA Keystone Conference titles the past two seasons.

Waynesburg 20, Washington 6

Waynesburg stunned host Washington in their Interstate Conference opener. Waynesburg was winless last season and scored a total of just 42 points in their nine games.

Beaver Falls 37, Riverside 0

The No. 2 ranked Tigers rolled to the Midwestern win at Riverside. Junior running back Cody Cook led the Beaver Falls offense with 214 yards rushing on 15 carries. Cook scored four touchdowns on runs of 1, 31, 53, and 59 yards.

Beaver Falls outgained Riverside 463-84 in total offense.

Freedom 24, Ellwood City 14

Scott Freeman scored two touchdowns to lead Freedom to the Midwestern win against visiting Ellwood City. Freeman scored on runs of 36 and 5 yards. Nick Pertile and Derek Lehocky also scored touchdowns for the Bulldogs.

The loss spoiled the Ellwood City coaching debut of Don Phillips.

Center 38, Mohawk 8

The Trojans opened with a Midwestern conference rout over visiting Mohawk. Five different players scored touchdowns for Center. Preston Dawson completed 12 of his 15 passing attempts for 186 yards and a score for Center.

Keystone Oaks 7, Steel Valley 6

Keystone Oaks, which dropped down from Class AAA this season, opened with a win at defending Century conference champion Steel Valley. Dion Wiegand's 86-yard punt return in the second quarter accounted for the Golden Eagles lone touchdown in the contest.

Tyrell Smith of Steel Valley rushed for a game-high 157 yards on 13 carries but was held out of the end zone by a stubborn Keystone Oaks defense.

Ford City 11, Valley 6

The No. 5 ranked Sabers edged host Valley in a defensive struggle in their Allegheny opener.
