WPIAL Class A: Monaca upsets No. 5 Springdale

Zach Garber scored three touchdowns for Monaca last night in a 21-13 non-conference upset of visiting Springdale, the Post-Gazette's third-ranked team in WPIAL Class A.

Garber scored his first touchdown on a 26-yard interception return in the first quarter. Garber also had a 30-yard scoring run in the first that put Monaca up 14-0.

Springdale responded when Adam Shepard and Brian Shemenski reached the end zone on scoring runs.

Garber's one-yard run in the second quarter put Monaca up for good. He led the game with 71 yards rushing.

Monaca had 196 total yards and limited Springdale to 51.

OTHER GAMES

North Catholic 21, Serra 20

North Catholic's Matt Long caught a 30-yard touchdown pass and returned an interception 95 yards for a score in the second as the host Trojans edged No. 5 Serra. T.J. Heatherington led Serra with 138 yards rushing and three touchdowns on 23 carries. Martin Long had 163 yards passing and a touchdown for North Catholic.

Clairton 41, Laurel 0

No. 2 Clairton got three touchdown runs from Dontae Howard and saw Kevin Weatherspoon catch two scoring passes in a rout of visiting Laurel. Clairton quarterback Andrew Currington ran for 128 yards and a touchdown and threw for 144 yards. Weatherspoon had five catches for 107 yards.

Carlynton 32, Beth-Center 22

Quarterback Michael Kiplagat scored three touchdowns in the second half and led Carlynton to a win against visiting Beth-Center. Kiplagat had 117 yards rushing on 12 carries.

Bentworth 20, Mapletown 0

Benjamin Gregg passed for 100 yards and two touchdowns and led Bentworth to a win at Mapletown. Cory Liermann and Dan Hansel caught Gregg's scoring passes in the second and third quarters respectively, while Joseph Vahaly added a 30-yard touchdown run in the fourth. Bentworth had 235 total yards while Mapletown had only 160.

Fort Cherry 25, Carmichaels 0

Fort Cherry got two rushing touchdowns and a scoring pass from David Phillips and claimed a 25-0 win at Carmichaels. Nate Crossey ran for 125 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries for Fort Cherry. Phillips finished with 107 yards passing. Fort Cherry had 157 yards rushing while Carmichaels had 88.

Frazier 28, California 12

Kevin Shanaberger scored three touchdowns as Frazier sealed a win at California. Shanaberger led the game with 155 yards on 29 carries. Two of his touchdowns came on the ground.

Jefferson-Morgan 33, Leechburg 6

Hans Lubich, Brent Moskola, Derek Haiden, Joe Scrip and Chris Faddis each scored touchdowns for Jefferson Morgan which romped against visiting Leechburg. Jefferson Morgan quarterback Brandon Kozich had 75 yards and one touchdown passing. Lubich led the game with 86 yards rushing.

Wilmington 42, Brentwood 7

Wilmington of District 10 got 130 yards and two touchdowns passing from Shane Wagner in the rout of visiting Brentwood. Derrick Burns scored two touchdowns for Wilmington. Chad Palladino led WIlmington with 58 yards rushing.

Chartiers-Houston 41, West Greene 7

Chartiers Houston scored 34 points in the first half and went on to rout host West Greene.

West Middlesex 27, Union 20

West Middlesex of District 10 claimed a non-conference win at Union.
