McCandless woman killed in fire, death ruled accidental
Thursday, August 28, 2008

A 75-year-old woman's death Tuesday night in a house fire was ruled accidental yesterday by the Allegheny County medical examiner's office.

Investigators with the county fire marshal's office yesterday were still looking into the cause of the blaze that killed Gloria Wright and could not be reached for comment.

"We don't suspect any foul play," Allegheny County police homicide Lt. Bill Palmer said.

Mrs. Wright's body was found in a bathroom of her ranch-style house in the 800 block of Saratoga Drive in McCandless. Mrs. Wright, a widow, lived alone.

She was pronounced dead at the scene at 10:45 p.m. An autopsy showed Mrs. Wright died from acute smoke and fume inhalation.

A neighbor, Walter "Lou" Snodgrass, 81, described Mrs. Wright as a "very fine person" and said he sometimes ran errands for her or helped her with housework.

Mr. Snodgrass called 911 around 10 a.m. after he stepped onto his porch and saw flames "shooting out of the back room."

The emergency had already been called in and firefighters were en route. McCandless police Chief Gary Anderson said one of the three area fire chiefs and a local resident tried to get in the house to look for Mrs. Wright, but the heat and smoke thwarted them.

It took about 90 minutes for firefighters to bring the blaze under control, Chief Anderson said. He said he did not know the point of origin or the cause of the fire.
