Basketball U.S. women perfect in pool play

Tina Thompson scored 10 points during a 21-0 run, sending the U.S. women past New Zealand, 96-60. The Americans went 5-0 in pool play, winning by an average of 43 points. The United States will play South Korea in the quarterfinals tomorrow.

Gymnastics Johnson, Liukin medal in event finals

Romania's Sandra Izbasa, the very last competitor, grabbed the floor exercise gold, defeating Americans Shawn Johnson and Nastia Liukin, who took silver and bronze, respectively. In women's vault, North Korea's Hong Un Jong took gold, ahead of 35-year-old German Oksana Chusovitina and China's Cheng Fei. China dominated the men's event finals, with Zou Kai winning floor exercise and Ziao Qin taking pommel horse. American Alexander Artemev finished seventh on pommel horse with a fall.

Softball U.S. women continue dominating run

The U.S. women's softball team won its 20th consecutive Olympic game as it defeated the Netherlands, 8-0. Monica Abbott pitched five perfect innings, and Crystl Bustos, Jessica Mendoza and Tairia Flowers all homered for the Americans. During these Olympics, the Americans have outscored opponents, 44-1, posted five shutouts and hit 12 homers.

Beach volleyball May-Treanor/Walsh advance to semis

Americans Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh defeated Brazilians Ana Paula and Larissa in straight sets to advance to the final four. The other American women's team, Nicole Branagh and Elaine Youngs, lost to the Chinese duo of Xue Chen and Zhang Xi.

Rowing U.S. women's eight wins gold

The U.S. women's eight, the reigning world champions, took gold, the first gold for the United States in the event since the 1984 Olympics. The U.S. men's eight took bronze behind Canada. The Canadians became the first world champion men's crew to win Olympic gold in 35 years.

Rooting interest: An update on athletes of area interest

Lauryn Williams, Rochester native, finished fourth in the women's 100-meter final.

Aleesha Barber, Penn State graduate representing Trinidad and Tobago, finished fourth in her 100-meter hurdles heat with a national record of 13.01 seconds, but failed to advance to the semifinals.

Jan Jagla, formerly of Penn State, plays for Germany against the United States today in men's basketball action.

Jeremy Cummings, West Virginia. The U.S. baseball team plays China today.
