Student who made pipe bombs given probation
Wednesday, July 30, 2008

A former California University of Pennsylvania student was sentenced to five years' probation in federal court Monday for making pipe bombs.

Senior U.S. District Judge Gustave Diamond also ordered Michael Blattner, 20, to continue mental health treatment, which has been ongoing since his arrest.

Mr. Blattner was charged in December 2006 after making repeated trips to Home Depot to buy items for the explosives, including threaded pipes and end caps.

He advertised the devices on his MySpace Web page, and said that he was a "small firearms dealer, pyrotechnician."

After Home Depot employees noticed the repeated trips to the store, they contacted California University police, who searched Mr. Blattner's dorm room. There they found explosive materials, as well as drawings of improvised explosive devices.

During a search of Mr. Blattner's parents' home in Upper St. Clair, police found two pipe bombs.

He pleaded guilty in August to one count of manufacturing a destructive device.
