At 103, Ted Swartz has no interest in shooting his age at Punxsutawney Country Club. He's content knowing he's the club's oldest golfer and the member with the best sense of humor:
"I've played more rounds of golf, paid more dues, replaced more divots and told more lies than any other member of the Punxsutawney Country Club," he says.
Mr. Swartz, who turned 103 on Thursday, played his last round when he was 96, which is also around the time he stopped driving. He lives in Punxatawney and enjoys listening to one of his nine caregivers read from the newspaper -- "especially the sports page and yes, golf," says caregiver Peggy Young. "He's such a fine man, a gentleman's gentleman."
He was born on July 24, 1905, and became a member of the country club in 1914. In 1929, he was its men's champion. On July 7, 1936, he married Louise White, whom he had known as a family friend since she was 6 years old. Mrs. Swartz taught English in Punxsatawney schools for 17 years, and Mr. Swartz ran his family's clothing business, Swartz Men's Store. They had two daughters, Sally Baldus of San Diego and Emily "Ricki" Fudge of San Francisco.
The couple traveled together to nearly every state. Mr. Swartz says the key to a long marriage is cooperation, though his wife always chalked it up to patience with her beloved, stubborn husband. After 71 years of marriage, Mrs. Swartz died in October 2007 at the age of 95. Mr. Swartz has three grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.
