Bouffant, beehive, back-combed or teased to a pulp: Don't look now but big hair is back in, well, a big way.
Amy Winehouse is the poster girl for the retro chic look. The
British singer sports a massive hive on her head, with the rest of her mane cascading down her back. She pairs it with heavily winged eyeliner in an exaggerated update of '60s style. But less dramatic versions are popping up on both the catwalk and sidewalk.
Why?
Same reason it appeared in the first place. It's a fun, glamorous, sexy look that gives the impression of voluptuous hair with a few flicks of a teasing comb.
"Everything is cyclical," says Philip Pelusi, who has 13 hair salons in the region. "People are getting rid of the flat irons and wearing the hair more natural, with more volume. There's more emphasis on hair color, on beautiful hair and texture.
"We're starting to use curling irons again, setting hair dry, dusting off the velcro rollers. And there's a little more teasing and lift at the crown, especially for a night out."
