Ask Carley: A champagne toast should include everyone
Monday, April 21, 2008

Q: Our catering expenses exceeded our budget. We still want to do a champagne toast, but my mom wants to only provide the wedding party and parents with champagne. She says all the others can toast with the drink they have. Is this tacky?

A: In a word, yes. Your guests are there to celebrate your wedding with you, and it would be inconsiderate to create separation between the guests and the wedding party. Your best bet in this situation is to offer a less expensive drink, such as wine or a nonalcoholic sparkling drink. If this isn't in your budget, it may be best to forgo the specialized champagne toast altogether. A toast is a toast whether it's with champagne, wine or water.
