Snow falling on counties west, north of Pittsburgh
Friday, March 07, 2008

Snow started to fall early this afternoon in counties to the west and north of Pittsburgh, while Allegheny County and areas to the south experienced somewhat warmer temperatures and rainfall.

PEMA, PennDOT issue heavy snow warning

The Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency and the state Department of Transportation have issued a heavy snow warning for the northwestern part of the state. Residents can see the state's warning and advisory here.

As the day progresses, though, snow likely will spread across most of the region and cause travel difficulties.

The National Weather Service in Pittsburgh has issued a winter weather advisory from 5 p.m. today through 7 p.m. tomorrow for Allegheny, Washington, Greene, Westmoreland, Fayette and Indiana counties in Pennsylvania. Also in the advisory are Monongalia, Ohio, Marshall, Wetzel and Marion counties in West Virginia.

A winter storm warning for Beaver, Lawrence, Mercer, Venango, Butler, Clarion and Forest counties is in effect until 7 p.m. tomorrow. Other northern counties and most of eastern Ohio also are under a similar winter storm warning, which means heavy snow and/or ice is expected.

Some schools in those areas are dismissing classes early. See information about schools and other community activities on KDKA.com, the Post-Gazette's news partner.

The Mon Wharf still is closed to parking today. While the water has receded, a layer of mud still covers much of the parking area.
