Heavy rains trigger slides in Sq. Hill, Beaver County
Tuesday, March 04, 2008
High water from heavy rain and snow melt today flowed over the bridge that connects Brady's Run Road with Brady's Run Lodge in Brighton, Beaver County.

Heavy rains that started overnight and continued through today have caused landslides on roads in Squirrel Hill and Beaver County and are swelling creeks around the district.

This afternoon, Pittsburgh Public Works closed Commercial Road between Beechwood Boulevard and Whipple Street in Squirrel Hill because of a landslide. Drivers should use Forbes and Braddock avenues as detours.

A landslide this afternoon also was blocking a northbound lane of Route 60, the Beaver Valley Expressway, between the Hopewell and Aliquippa exits. PennDOT crews were on the scene, and police were directing traffic.

The National Weather Service in Pittsburgh has issued a flood watch through late tonight for Western Pennsylvania, eastern Ohio, northern West Virginia and western Maryland.

Rainfall amounts of as much as 2 1/2 inches into early tonight on top of snow melt from yesterday may result in flooding of streams and creeks. Rain will increase throughout the day with a thunderstorm possible into this evening.

Workers at the Mon Wharf parking area were telling customers they should get their cars out of the lot by 6 p.m. today. The wharf will be closed tomorrow and until further notice.

Check out the latest conditions and forecast. Commuters also can access the updated traffic conditions.
