Heavy snow arrives, causes rash of crashes
Friday, February 29, 2008

Things were supposed to get ugly, but the forecast precipitation was a no snow during rush hour this morning.

That changed later in the morning, however, when the snow finally moved into Allegheny County. The National Weather Service in Pittsburgh forecast accumulation of one to three inches. Another inch is forecast for tonight.

Commuters had been told to expect snow showers to arrive sometime around 8 this morning in Southwestern Pennsylvania, just in time to impact the end of the rush hour. But it hit several hours later, in time for the Myron Cope Terrible Towel wave attended by about 350 in Downtown at noon.

The snowfall caused a rash of accidents. In Moon, a tractor trailer and car crashed, and there was a report of entrapment, at University Boulevard at Moon Clinton Road.

A school bus and another vehicle crashed on Brownsville Road in Carrick.

And city ambulances were directed to take patients to the nearest appropriate hospital, rather than to more distant facilities requested by patients.

The weather service said the snowfall would begin to slow down by 4 p.m. but heavy wet flakes continued to fall well after that.

Check out the latest conditions and forecast. Commuters also can access the updated traffic conditions.
