Two wildly differing lives meet in terrible tragedy

North Catholic High School junior Adrienne T. Keil, of Bloomfield, was walking on the sidewalk along the 5500 block of Penn Avenue when she was hit. Police have charged Angelo V. Rodriguez, 41, of Lawrenceville, who allegedly told them he had been drinking and doing drugs all day.

"It was difficult to see these students," Mr. Ravenstahl said. "They just lost a friend and classmate."

The mayor was visiting North Catholic, his alma mater, to present awards to the winners of an essay contest titled "Dear Mayor Ravenstahl, I love Pittsburgh because???"

He commended the quick response of the police who quickly arrested Mr. Rodriguez, who fled and hid under a nearby porch after the crash.

"We want to continue to move forward and do anything we can to assure this doesn't happen again," he said.

Principal Edward Scheid said the award presentation was important to help students move on.

"Part of dealing with this tragic situation is to get back to normalcy," he said.

Sheldon Hawkins, 25, was injured in the crash. Police said he is still in critical condition.
