Suspected transvestite prostitute arrested in cop shooting
Friday, January 05, 2007

A transvestite, suspected in the shooting Wednesday morning of an undercover vice detective, was arrested this morning in McKees Rocks by Allegheny County sheriff's deputies and other agents.

William Anthony Scott, 20, is the man police believe was posing as a female prostitute who shot and wounded Det. Jeff Smith to avoid arrest in the Hill District Jan. 3.

Mr. Scott is charged with attempted homicide, aggravated assault, reckless endangerment, escape and firearms violations.

He was in the Allegheny County Jail this morning awaiting arraignment.

A preliminary hearing is set for 10 a.m. Jan. 12 in Municipal Court.

Pittsburgh police said Mr. Scott also will be charged with prostitution.

The sheriff's deputies, along with Pittsburgh police, agents of the federal bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, found Mr. Scott at a residence in the 1200 block of Church Street in McKees Rocks around 3 a.m. today. The suspect was lying on a couch in the living room pretending to be asleep when he was apprehended, the sheriff's office said.

A woman who lives at the address also was present and taken into custody for questioning. Investigators have not determined whether the woman will be charged with hindering Mr. Scott's apprehension.

Detective Smith, a 23-year veteran, and his partner had been working undercover arresting prostitutes in the Hill District when they encountered the suspect, who was dressed as a woman and wearing a wig, investigators said.

After the suspect realized he was the subject of the sting operation, he bolted from the unmarked police car. As the officers chased him, the suspect turned and fired a pistol drawn from his purse.

The bullet remains lodged in the detective's side.

Since the shooting, the Mr. Scott had been sought by numerous state, local and federal agents. During the massive manhunt, 11 suspects, all associated in some way with Mr. Scott, have been arrested. All of the subsequent arrests were of fugitives already being sought by police on charges related to drug trafficking, prostitution and assault.

Police police learned of two outstanding arrest warrants for Mr. Scott -- one for failure to appear and another on charges of simple assault and burglary -- and went to his Bentley Drive apartment in the Hill District to serve them.

Mr. Scott was not there, but detectives found evidence, including clothing he wore Wednesday morning, that connected him to the shooting, Pittsburgh Police Cmdr. Thomas Stangrecki said.
