City League Soccer Championships: Allderdice sweeps past Schenley again
Thursday, November 02, 2006

It was a case of better late than never for Allderdice as it swept the City League soccer championships last night at Cupples Stadium.

Allderdice topped Schenley for the second time in three years. The Allderdice boys rallied for a 3-2 overtime victory; the girls' team earned a 2-0 win against the Spartans.

The Allderdice girls (15-3-1) were favorites going into the game and won their 11th City crown since 1988.

The game was scoreless until only four minutes were left in regulation play. Dominique Ward then took a shot that was deflected into the net by a Schenley defender to break the deadlock. Two minutes later, Leah Behrends added an unassisted goal.

The Dragons have defeated Schenley (11-6-3) in the final each time during their current three-year run of championships.

"We played well and moved the ball, but we started out letting some opportunities slip away," Dragons coach Chris Edmonds said.

The boys' team avenged a loss to Schenley (13-6-2) in last season's title game and claimed its 17th championship in 19 seasons. The Dragons (15-3) rallied from a 2-0 deficit, forcing overtime on Jake Lyons' free kick with 2:25 to play.

"I wasn't looking at the clock," Lyons said. "I just knew we had to get a quick score."

Sam Freedman got the winner with 7:13 left in the first 15-minute overtime period. He drilled in a shot during a scramble in front of the Schenley goal that was started by Phil Broadus' corner kick.

"We came from two goals down against Schenley to win a game 6-4 in the [regular] season, so I never gave up on this team," Allderdice coach Ed Powers said.

Justin Brunsvold scored in the first half and Mamadou Kouyate in the second to give Schenley a 2-0 lead.
