Our essay "Anyone's Son," about the drug addiction and recent death of our 21-year-old son, appeared two weeks ago in this space. We have been overwhelmed by the response from readers, both from the greater Pittsburgh area and from around the country as this piece has made its way into so many homes and hearts.

Anyone's Son: Readers respond

Something very unexpected has happened. We have sensed in the e-mails and letters we have received the visceral rage that exists in so many of us that so little seems to have been done to stop these tragedies from occurring.

These responses vividly demonstrate how critically important it is to bring about profound and sustainable changes to turn the tide against these drugs that are killing our children and our families before it really is too late.

As we said in our essay, it is time to stand up against this enemy. And together with so many of you, we intend to do so. Over the next few months we will be traveling around the country and talking with families and experts alike. We will try and give a voice to this tragedy. We welcome any and all input.

Over this time, we will be building a case for new national initiatives and new funding policies that can make a difference. We expect to form a public policy foundation that can act as a clearinghouse for this work and can help advocate and bring about change. Though it's early in the process, we hope that this organization can work together with existing groups and resources, but also be an independent and loud voice that reminds all of us of the hard work and challenges that lie ahead.

From literally over 100 e-mails, we have selected some that speak to for the many. You can read these responses by clicking here.

We thank everyone who wrote us and look forward to updating you on our progress. Together we can, and will, make a difference in this nightmare. Please don't hesitate to contact us at jbildner@newhorizonspartners.com.
