Riverfront friends plan to celebrate with Trail Mix(er)

Talk about designated driving: The Friends of the Riverfront invite you to consider hiking, biking, boating or busing to its annual Trail Mix(er), "a confluence of music, art and energy." It will be held outdoors from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday near the nonprofit's offices at the Pittsburgh Terminal Properties on the South Side.

Friends will spotlight its environmental and recreational projects along the Three Rivers Heritage Trail, particularly the plans for the unfinished trail between 10th and First streets along the south shore of the Monongahela River, just below the party.

Also celebrated will be the return of the mayflies to this region, through the art installation "Mayflies," a Persephone Project by Carnegie Mellon University's Stephanie Flom. And also in the air will be the sounds of the Boilermaker Jazz Band with Jennie Luvv.

Food and drink are included in the price of tickets, which are $50, or only $35 for members or if you arrive by foot, bike, boat or bus. For more information, including about discounts for groups of 10 or more, call 412-488-0212 or e-mail Jennifer@friendsoftheriverfront.org.

PSO happy hour

People usually go to Heinz Hall for top-notch concerts, but this Thursday it will be for top-shelf liquor. Not to mention good conversation.

Although the PSO won't play a note, it's opening the Heinz Hall Garden for a public happy hour, "Symphony With a Splash." With a cash bar and a jazz band, the shindig runs from about 5:30 to 7 p.m., long enough to meet a few friends or gossip about work away from smoky bars. It's a word-of-mouth event, to be repeated in the summer several times, so you won't see any ads or signs for it.
